Christmas Eve Update

Christmas-eve in Antarctica: We have been in and out of touch with Richard for the last few days. The weather has been extremely trying - serious whiteout conditions have hampered the team's progress. Chris De Lapuente was recently evacuated from the expedition due to his persisting injuries. His swollen knee and broken wrist forced him to leave the expedition. We are happy to report that he was recently flown back to Chile, where he will be consulting doctors on his injuries. Chris had broken his wrist and injured his knee on a bad fall walking on hard ice. He continued on for nearly 4 days, doing his best to cope with the injuries. It took two days to have him evacuated from the expedition - persisting whiteout conditions did not allow for the airplane to land and collect him. Spirits remained high through these trying times. Chris continued to be extremely positive throughout the whole event. Once the airplane had collected Chris, Richard put the hammer down. The team left the following morning at 4 AM for the South Pole. Richard wants to gain ground and get back on schedule. He hasn't recently called - indicating that they are now skiing longer days in order to cover more ground faster. That's all for now. Merry Christmas! Tessum, Josee and Nansen
