Welcome fellow Adventurers!

We are pleased to have you join us on the August 2011 hiking traverse of the Akshayuk Pass on Baffin Island!
Famously known as one of the most picturesque routes in the Canadian North, the Akshayuk Pass was once an Inuit route used to connect the villages of Pangnirtung and Qikitarjuat. The Akshayuk Pass, home to Mount Asgard, the highest “purely vertical face on earth” at 1,250m (Mount Thor) is known for its beautiful glaciers, stunning mountains and breath taking landscapes.

The expedition will start from Qikiqtarjuaq and hike to Pangnirtung, retracing the century old Inuit route.

On August 21nd, 2011, we fly from Ottawa to Qikiqtarjuaq on Baffin Island. The following day, a local driver takes us by boat to the head of the Akshayuk Pass in the North Pang Fjord, approximately 4 hours from Qikiqtarjuaq. Have your camera ready, we may see a seal, whale, narwhal or walrus. We hike an average 10 kilometers per day, up the Owl River, through June Valley and through the glacial moraine to Glacier Lake. From Glacier Lake, we can take a side trip up the Turner Glacier, near the base of Mount Asgard. Mount Asgard was first summited in 1953 by a Swiss team including Hans Weber, Tessum Weber’s grandfather. James Bond is famously known for jumping off Mount Asgard in the opening scene of “The Spy Who Loved Me”.

From Glacier Lake we will continue onwards through the Akshayuk Pass to Overlord where another boat will collect us and transport us to Pangnirtung. The final few days of the trip will include skiing below Mount Thor, past Mount Odin and camping at the Overlord Shelter.

Upon arrival in Pangnirtung, we will spend the afternoon touring the village; visiting the local “Weave & Carving shop” as well as the Visitor Centre to better understand the history of the region.

The trip will cost $3990 CAD per person plus GST
