We flew out to the Filchner ice shelf today and started skiing south! You will be able to track us at www.weberarctic.com as our positions are updated. Today was a little slow going with some soft snow and warm (for Antarctica….it’s all relative) conditions. The Chilean version of Muscle Milk is not quite as good as the real thing, but [...]
We are now at our basecamp at the foot of Union Glacier in Antarctica. It”s stunningly beautiful. We flew in on the Ilyusion 76 shown in the picture. We pitched the tents, packed our sleds and went for a nice 2 hour ski. The new sleds are fantastic! They glide nice and smooth. This should really make a big difference [...]
During our South Pole expedition we will be taking photos and writing blogs. The blogs we will compose on a Panasonic Tough Book mini computer. Then we will send an email via our Iridium telephone to our servers. We have set up our blogging software to automatically post the blogs. As well, the blogs are forwarded to our various Facebook [...]
Having the latest and greatest equipment has been part of every polar expedition all the way back to Franklin (yes, he was testing 20 hp steam-powered engines that each weighed 24 tonnes!) and before. We are no exception. The coolest piece of gear we have are Recon Goggles. These goggles have a built-in GPS display that will give us speed, [...]
Our custom ski sails made by Wolf Beringer. These are special kite for high winds. They have short lines so they are easy to control; easy to launch, easy to put on the ground.
Today, we packed up the food into daily ration packs. Then we transferred it to rented space in a commercial freezer. No more mouldy biscuits and rancid butter for me! Two months food for five people in a few bags. It looks like nothing when finally sitting in a pile, but it is always so much effort to get it [...]
Kathy Breagger our team member from San Diego arrived this afternoon. She brought our tents, solar panels, kite-sails and cool new communications gear. Very special, Kathy made us expedition patches! The weather in Antarctica has been bad. ALE, the company that will fly us to Antarctica has not made a flight in ten days. This does not look great for [...]
